How to play Mahjong Solitaire

Open Mahjong Solitaire, check the instructions and begin a round. Remove all forty layered tiles in matching pairs. Use the example below to understand a decision. Treat the first round as a chance to learn the controls. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

Match number-marked tiles in a compact layered layout. The starting arrangement has a complete removal route, but your choices can still block later pairs.

Practice with a purpose

When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round. Notice the feedback after each input.

The purpose of your moves

Remove all forty layered tiles in matching pairs. Keep that objective in view throughout the round. Start with a deliberate move.

The playing sequence

  1. Choose a tile with no covering tile and a free left or right side.
  2. Choose a matching free tile.
  3. Uncover lower layers.
  4. Use hints or undo.

Getting comfortable with the controls

Tap two free matching tiles. Keep the playing area visible while using these controls. Use one clear input at a time.

Work through an example

Equal symbols cannot pair while one is covered. Use the example as a guide rather than a substitute for reading your board. Verify the rule before continuing.

Where a round can go wrong

Layer and side access matter as well as symbol matching. Check the rule before repeating the action. Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal.
