Learn the rules of Sokoban

Take a moment with Sokoban before moving to another game. Push every crate onto a target. Look at what changes after your first action. Check the rule that explains your first action. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

Push two crates onto their targets in compact 7×7 rooms. The starting layouts can be solved; an unhelpful push may still trap a crate.

Practice beyond the first move

Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use. Keep the objective visible.

Understand the aim

Push every crate onto a target. The feedback beside the game helps you follow the round. Take a moment to understand the current position.

Work through the instructions

  1. Move through empty floor.
  2. Push one crate into empty space.
  3. Never pull or push two at once.
  4. Undo a deadlock and continue.

Getting comfortable with the controls

Arrow keys or direction buttons. Keep the playing area visible while using these controls. Use the visible help when you are unsure of the next input.

An example to follow

A crate in a non-target corner cannot be recovered by pulling. Your next round may have a different position, so inspect it before acting. Check the stated objective.

An important reminder

Consider the player’s access behind crates. A different version of the game may use a different rule. Choose one rule to keep in mind for this round. Apply it consistently rather than guessing what another version might allow.
